Shops and businesses in Malpe remained closed on Saturday as a mark of support for a massive protest organized by the Malpe Fishermen’s Association. The demonstration at the port was a response to a caste-based case filed against several fisherwomen, sparking outrage within the community.

Strong Backing for Fisherwomen

The protest saw participation from MLA Yashpal Suvarna, former minister Pramod Madhwaraj, ex-MLA K Raghupati Bhat, and Association President Dayanand Suvarna. They collectively denied any caste-based insult, emphasizing the port’s tradition of unity and cooperation.

Demands for Immediate Action

Protesters submitted a memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner and Additional SP, demanding an immediate withdrawal of the case, which they claimed was baseless. Fishermen’s groups have set a 48-hour deadline for bail to be granted to the accused fisherwomen, warning of intensified demonstrations outside the District Collector’s or SP’s office if authorities fail to act.

Escalation Expected

Saturday’s rally at Malpe port was just the beginning, with fishermen vowing to amplify their protests if their demands remain unmet.
