Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister of State for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, inspected the damage done by sea erosion to 150 metres of concrete road and a house here on Thursday. Kuthpady-Padukere is a peninsular land with the Arabian Sea on the West and the Udyavara rivulet on the East. The concrete road runs on the coastline. Three coconut trees had been washed into the sea. Though boulders had been put to protect the road, the damage to the road was clearly visible. In fact, high sea waves crossed the concrete road and hit the wall of the house belonging to Nadu Suvarna. Mr. Suvarna’s wife, Saroja, said the family was living in the dread of the sea waves. “For the last six days, the waves have been crossing the road and hitting the wall of my house. The waves are intense during early morning to mid-day, she said. Mr. Madhwaraj, who inspected Mr. Suvarna’s house, directed the tahsildar to give him compensation and provide a house to him under Basava Vasati Yojane. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Madhwaraj said that usually the sea erosion used to take place at Udyavar-Kanakoda area every year. But this year, sea erosion had shifted here. The sand under the concrete road had slipped and there was a danger of the road collapsing. Soon after getting information of sea erosion, 150 truckloads of boulders had been put to protect the 120 meters of the road. “We are doing everything to protect the road. If the road is not protected, then the sea waves would join the rivulet on other side and that would be a big danger, he said. More boulders would be put to the West side. The damaged concrete road would be repaired or strengthened in the coming days. The putting of the boulders was a temporary measure. Already, tenders had been floated under the ?90 crore Asian Development Bank assisted project to construct a permanent sea wall in the critical reaches of the coast in the district. About 200 metres of reach from Udyavara-Kankoda to Kuthpady-Padukere too had been included under the project. Sea erosion had also taken place in Marvanthe village in Kundapur taluk owing to the wrong alignment of the breakwater channel there. There too boulders were being put for protection, Mr. Madhwaraj said.
