The Udupi district administration has announced strict enforcement measures against bull trawling and light fishing along the coast.

District Commissioner Dr. Vidyakumari, in an official statement, emphasized that the Karnataka High Court has upheld the ban on such unscientific fishing techniques in line with the Government of India’s directive. As a result, an order has been issued prohibiting bull trawling, pair trawling, and the use of artificial lights like halogen, LED, and fish attractors in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)—both within and beyond territorial waters.

This ban applies to all mechanized fishing boats and motorized crafts, including support and supply vessels. Violators will face legal consequences under Section 3 of the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act, 1986, and the Karnataka Police Act, making it a cognizable offense.

The administration has urged fishermen to adopt sustainable methods to preserve marine biodiversity and safeguard the long-term livelihood of the fishing community.
