Work is under way to protect the road near the sea close to the breakwater channel at Marvanthe village in Udupi district. Assistant Commissioner Shilpa Nag told The Hindu that there was sea erosion after the breakwater channel was affecting a road close to the village. About 200 persons live nearby but their houses were not in danger. Boulders were put in the sea to protect the road from the waves before monsoon. However, the tides had intensified in the last two days and the earlier boulders were washed away. But, the Department of Ports and Fisheries put up more boulders in the area. “Ten truckloads of boulders were placed on Thursday. More boulders were placed on Friday too, she said. Executive engineer Dayanand said boulders were placed to protect the road for 10 days before monsoon. The process of erecting a temporary wall to protect the road from tidal waves was on for the last two days, he said.
