The long standing demand for renovation by the vendors at Champakkara fish market may be met soon. The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) authorities who visited the market, along with people’s representatives and additional district magistrate (ADM), has agreed to consider the demand for renovating the market favourably . The fish vendors and fisherfolk were demanding renovation of the market in the wake of ongoing metro rail works. The KMRL has already decided to renovate the Champakkara bridge to enable fourlane traffic. “We conducted a site visit on Thursday . It was found that most of the demands raised by the fisher folk are genuine. We will be considering these demands favorably ,” said an official with KMRL. Due to the works on the metro rail and Champakkara bridge, the business in the market would be affected. “So, the vendors have demanded relocation of the market immediately . We will be considering the request also,” KMRL officials said. Though KMRL may spent the amount required for the renovation of the market, acquisition of land for the purpose will be an issue. Around 50 cents of land need be acqui red for the project. This parcel of land belongs to some religious organizations. The peoples’ representatives and district administration would be holding discussions with the religious organizations for securing the land.
