A three- member delegation representing Friends of Marine Life, a city- based NGO, left here for New York on Saturday to participate in the Ocean Conference to be held at the United Nations headquarters from June 5 to 9. The FML is one of the 112 stakeholder organisations selected from different countries around the world to participate in the global event focussing on conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources. The only other participant from India is the Puducherry- based Resource Institute of Social Education (RISE). The FML delegation, comprising Robert Pani Pilla, Johnson Jament and Lisba Yesudas, will make presentations at the plenary meeting and partnership dialogue on marine pollution. The NGO has been active in mapping the marine biodiversity off the southern coast of the country. Ocean health Organised by the UN to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, the Ocean Conference is open to a broad range of stakeholders including non-governmental organisations, civil society organisations, academic institutions, the scientific community, the private sector and philanthropic organisations. The conference is expected to deliver a call for action and come up with a list of voluntary commitments made by governments and stakeholder groups to reverse the decline in the health of the oceans.
