A modern fish market in Palluruthy will get the rare ‘distinction’ of being inaugurated twice in two years. The market, build at a cost of Rs 2.30crore, was first inaugurated on November 22, 2014, by the then fisheries minister K Babu. After the formal inauguration, the market was not opened for business and soon became a haven for miscreants. Now, the place has been cleared. On Monday, mayor Soumini Jain will inaugurate the market again and conduct the first sale. Deputy mayor T J Vinod will preside over the function. There are 48 stalls in the double-storey building constructed by the Kerala State Coastal Area Development Corporation (KSCADC) on the corporation land in Palluruthy. The project was funded by National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB). The market has an office, a rest room, a cold storage facility, a flake ice unit and a waste water treatment plant. Since the building remained closed for years, the sanitary wares and power equipment were stolen and the freezer got rusted. “We could not open the outlet as it lacked water and electricity connection. Now, we have secured water and electricity connection and all stalls have been auctioned,” said Palluruthy councillor Thampi Subramaniam.
