Marine Enforcement Department personnel on Tuesday seized a fishing boat which was operating in violation of international maritime boundary line and listed in the illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing of India Ocean Tune Commission (IOTC). Bio Hingis, owned by Kanyakumari native P Nasiyans was impounded at Thoppumpady fishing harbour during the inspection of licences of fishing boats. The inspection was conducted jointly by fisheries department officials and Marine Enforcement. The vessel was seized when it was being prepared for fishing. The IOTC included the boat in the list of IUU for fishing in British maritime boundary without licence in 2015 – 16. In order to escape from the eyes of the agencies, the operator replaced the old engine with new one and changed the name into ‘Arogya Annai’. The Centre and the Tamil Nadu government had approached the Kerala Fisheries Department to impound the boat. Ernakulam fisheries deputy director will initiate action against the operator under Merchant Shipping Act and Kerala Marine Fisheries Regulations Act.
