The Latin Catholic Diocese has asked the government to persist with the ongoing search for fishers presumed lost to the sea in the aftermath of Cyclone Ockhi. It urged the State to prevail on the Centre to conduct submarine searches using unmanned subs and other equipment. In the event that no more missing persons are traced, the government should bring their families under the ambit of the relief scheme for Ockhi-affected citizens. According to the Church, 324 fishers remained untraced as on Tuesday. They included 119 from Thiruvananthapuram, 148 from Thuthoor, and 57 from other coastal villages. The Church also demanded that the Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments act in tandem on the pressing matter. They should coordinate with the Centre to accord maximum relief to the affected families. The diocese also demanded the government to expedite the identification of bodies kept in various hospital morgues in the State. The government should ensure that the relief for bereaved families was accurately targeted. The decisions were taken by the political committee of the diocese led by Vicar General Monsignor Fr. Eugene H. Periera. Monsignor Fr. James Kulas, M.M. George, M. Archangelo, Antony Albert, and Solomon Vettukad attended.
