The Tanur coast of the Malappuram district is set to host the first mariculture project in the state. Mariculture is a way of cultivating marine organisms, including fish, for food and other products in an open ocean or enclosed sections of an ocean. Local MLA V Abdurahman has submitted a proposal to the government regarding the project that the fisheries and finance departments would implement using foreign technologies. The project would be implemented in Tanur after forming enclosures filled with sea water on beach, the MLA said. The MLA said he will discuss the project details with high-level officials of the fisheries department at a meeting to be convened at Thiruvananthapuram soon. “We are expecting that the project would resolve the issue of decreasing level of marine resources, including the unavailability of fish items,” he said.
