A workshop organised here on Thursday by various organisations representing fishworkers urged the GST Council to review the high tax rates on fishing equipment. Participants representing the National Fishworkers Forum, Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation, and the Association of Deep Sea going Artisanal Fishermen said the tax introduced for fishing nets, twine, ropes, hooks, and dried fish and the enhanced rate for ice boxes, outboard engines, and spare engines were unjustifiable. Fearing that the high rates would cripple the fishing sector, the participants decided to submit a memorandum to the State and Central governments and the GST Council seeking tax exemption on fishing gear. Father Eugene Pereira inaugurated the event. NFF general secretary T.Peter presided. The organisations also resolved to take out a protest march to the office of the Accountant General here later this month.
