The International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) Trust has released the latest edition of SAMUDRA Report, its triannual journal on fisheries, communities and livelihoods. SAMUDRA Report No. 76, dated May 2017, features articles on fisheries from around the world, wth a special focus on the forthcoming Ocean Conference to be held in New York from 5 to 9 June 2017, which will address measures for supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG14), namely, to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. The issue features articles from Japan (on how communities are recovering from the effects of the tsunami), Sweden (on how prawn fishermen have secured tenure rights in a small-scale fisheries), India (on how coastal degradation and socioeconomic inequality have afected purse-seine fishing), Canada (on Alaska’s coastal fishing communities), and elsewhere. SAMUDRA Report No. 76 also focuses on how the World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations on fisheries subsidies can help conservation and sustainable exploitation efforts as well as ensure the well-being of ?shing communities around the world.
