The Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) will continue the insurance scheme for fishermen which expires in May, said Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar.

He said the government decided to extend the insurance coverage, which was launched last year, for the benefit of fishermen and their families.

A total payout of RM3 million was made from the insurance scheme to the families of fishermen who died at sea and on land like road accidents, and those who were hospitalised last year, he told reporters at a fishermen’s gathering hosted by the ministry in Bagan Sungai Pulai here Saturday.

He said under the insurance scheme, the family of a fisherman who died at sea would receive a compensation of over RM100,000 and a family of those who died on land (RM50,000) while for hospitalisation, a fisherman would get an allowance of RM100 a day.

Meanwhile, Noh likened PAS vice-president Datuk Husam Musa’s statement that the opposition would sell Putrajaya if it were to come to power to the Selangor’s government penchant of selling the state’s assets to raise money and described it as ungrateful to the federal government’s development strides.
