The North Sumatra police sank on Thursday a ship flying the Malaysian flag for illegally fishing in Pandan Island waters, North Sumatra.

Witnessed by North Sumatra police chief Insp Gen Eko Hadi Sutedjo, the trawler was blown up off Belawan, Medan.

“The explosion of the ship was permitted by the court. This is the first, Eko said, pledging to continue firm action as deterrence to illegal fishers.

“It’s a warning for foreign ships that illegally fish in our waters, he said.

The police detained its four crew who are Myanmarese nationals identified as CH, 24; HT, 30; M, 26; and K, 24, on Dec 9.

The crew have been handed over to the immigration office to be deported.

The police also confiscated 1.5 tons of fish, fuel and used cloth from the ship.

“All the evidence has been auctioned and the money handed over to the state, Eko said.
