The central bank. Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has reported a significant decline in the Maldives’ fish exports.

According to MMA statistics, the Maldives exported 33,994 metric tonnes of fish from January to October this year, down 46.1 percent from the 63,071 metric tonnes exported during the same period last year.

Monthly export comparison (2023 vs 2024):

  • January: 8,574 metric tonnes → 4,475 metric tonne
  • February: 7,149 metric tonne → 6,051 metric tonne
  • March: 11,975 metric tonne → 3,760 metric tonne
  • April: 7,383 metric tonne → 4,745 metric tonne
  • May: 9,648 metric tonne → 4,351 metric tonne
  • June: 6,910 metric tonne → 3,494 metric tonne
  • July: 3,189 metric tonne → 1,099 metric tonne
  • August: 1,848 metric tonne → 2,174 metric tonne
  • September: 2,083 metric tonne → 1,916 metric tonne
  • October: 4,310 metric tonne → 1,925 metric tonneAmong the various types of fish exports, skipjack tuna accounted for the largest share with 19,614 metric tonnes exported. Additionally, 7,632 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna and 4.803 metric tonnes of canned and pouched fish were exported.
