Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has tasked the expansion of their operations to Kaafu atoll Kooddoo and Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo to Maldives Transport and Construction Company (MTCC).

The scope of work includes various tasks such as developing the foundation work for the new brine freezing building in Kooddoo, constructing concrete brine tanks, establishing a container yard capable of accommodating 50 reefer containers, and developing an unloading platform in Kooddoo for MIFCO’s vessels.

MTCC has also been contracted to develop the foundation of the newly established fisheries complex in Thinadhoo, as well as the concrete work of the brine tank, and additional facilities. Furthermore, the company has been tasked with paving a portion of the harbour area around the island as well.

The company stated that these facilities will also help reduce the time spent in queues to weigh catch.

MIFCO has begun the practical works of expanding and developing the harbor in order to tackle address the current challenges encountered in fish procurement during the fishing season. While the company has started the process of finding a contractor to establish a 4,000 tonne cold storage facility in Kooddoo. This cold storage facility will significantly enhance MIFCO’s daily fish purchase capacity.

The project is being financed with the assistance of Saudi Fund for Development.
