Entrepreneurs are choosing sites in Kungyangon, Kayan and Thonegwa townships in Yangon to set up three breeding zones that will manufacture and export fisheries products meeting international standards, said the Yangon Region Fisheries Department. “We have not yet chosen exact sites. We are looking for land in the three townships, said Tun Win Myint, department director. The project requires 10,000 acres of land and will include modern machinery for processing marine products along with cold storage. Foreign investors are welcome but could not own all shares. During the 11th regular meeting between Vice President Myint Swe and local businesspeople, Union Minister for Planning and Finance Kyaw Win said his ministry was planning to disburse loans to develop the fisheries sector. “The government has allowed free export of goods. Livestock exports need to meet the requirements and necessary standards. This is why we have a plan to give loans for livestock breeding, said the minister. Myanmar annually earns US$650 million (880 billion kyat) to $700 million (948 billion kyat) from exporting marine products including fish and prawns, according to sources from the Fisheries Department. During the past nine months of this fiscal year, the value of fisheries exports was more than $76 million higher than the same period of last year, according to figures from the Ministry of Commerce. The value of fisheries exports is expected to reach $1 billion in 2019.
