Sri Lanka’s Fisheries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera says Myanmar has released 17 Sri Lankan fishermen and 3 vessels seized by that country’s forces.

At a press briefing held Thursday, the Minister said they were released following a discussion held with the Myanmar authorities jointly by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Fisheries.

The Sri Lankan fishermen have been detained by the Myanmar authorities in October 2014 for allegedly poaching in the territorial waters of Myanmar.

The Minister further said that the government is committed to enhance the living standard of the fishing community. All required facilities will be provided to update their profession.
