State seismologists assured the public there is no tsunami threat from the magnitude-6.5 quake that hit Taiwan Sunday afternoon.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said such quakes are likely to generate local tsunamis that can be destructive but within 100 km of the epicenter.
“(T)here is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” it said in its advisory.
Phivolcs noted the quake that hit Taiwan occurred at 1:43 p.m. Philippine time.
Citing its initial data, Phivolcs said the epicenter was located at 24 degrees North and 121 degrees East, with a depth of 10 km.
“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data. However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coast located within a hundred kilometers of the epicenter,” it said
