The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) on Friday allayed fears of a tsunami hitting the Philippines due to a magnitude-7 quake that hit the Solomon Islands shortly after noon.
PHIVOLCS said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was recorded at 12:13 p.m., Philippine Standard Time.
“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data,” it said.
It added there is “no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake.”
