Marine fishery has undergone a sea change with the latest being the cage fish farming undertaken by Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) on the coast here.According to sources, CMFRI officials Friday installed an enclosure in the sea for cage fish farming- the first-of-its-kind in the state. The enclosure was sailed into the sea with the help of a boat, said sources. The central agency will soon put around 5,000 fish fry in the enclosure as part of its fish farming initiative at Puri coast. Notably, the decision to install enclosures on Orissa coast was taken by the CMFRI earlier. CMFRI sources said the enclosure which can help the fish grow inside it has been installed at least 500 metres off the coast. The enclosure will be fitted with two solar lights for night illumination system. Four CMFRI flags and one National Flag will be fixed to the enclosure, said Biswajit Das, a senior official of central agency. CMFRI regional officer Reeta Jayshankar claimed that cage fish farming would boost fish production in the state and bring more profits to farmers. We will soon put fish seedlings in the enclosure. CMFRI will take steps to popularise cage fish farming in the state, Jayashankar added.
