The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Barrackpore organized a five-day Capacity Building-cum-Sensitization Programme on “Inland Fisheries Management” at its campus from 28th June to 2nd July, 2019.
The main objective of the programme organized for the Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Mayurbhanj District, Odisha was to up-scale the rural tribal women’s knowledge, skill and attitude towards the inland fisheries management to improve their livelihood.
The Capacity Building Programme was inaugurated by Dr. B.K Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI on 28th June, 2019. Dr. Das emphasized on the importance of skill development of the fishers and farmers on the various aspects of inland fisheries management to secure their life and livelihood. He stated that the programme has been targeted for strengthening the practical skill of the farmers to enhance the fish production in the open waters viz., reservoirs, canals, community tanks, etc. The Government of Odisha is also working with the aim and mission to empower the rural women through the Self Help Groups under the Mission “Shakti”.
The World Fish Centre has assigned the development of the GP Tanks through scientific aquaculture. With an aim to support and enhance the livelihood improvement of the weaker section of the society, the ICAR-CIFRI has joined hands with the Government of Odisha for building the capacity of the rural women in the inland fisheries management. A total of 31 fishers including 25 fisher-women of 12 Self Help Groups participated in the training programme.
