Board (NFDB) & Government of Meghalaya sponsored Training Programme on Freshwater aquaculture as a livelihood option for the farmers and officials of Meghalaya State has been inaugurated at ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture on 20 July 2016. Dr. B.C. Mohapatra, Principal Scientist and Co-Chairman, NEH Programme welcomed the guests and participants, and highlighted the role of ICAR-CIFA for the development of freshwater aquaculture activities in NEH region of the country. Dr. B. R. Pillai, Head, APED spoke about the long and fruitful association of ICAR-CIFA with the state of Meghalaya under the NEH programme of ICAR. She hoped that the present training programme will enable the state officials in spreading the latest technologies in breeding and seed production of diversified fish species developed by ICAR-CIFA. Dr J.K. Sundaray, Director (I/C) and State In-charge of Meghalaya spoke on the integration of technology and more innovation towards region specific technology. Dr A. K. Sahu, Former Head, APED, ICAR-CIFA spoke about his experiences in NEH region of India in last two decades. Dr (Prof.) Kasturi Samantaray, former Director, College of Fisheries, Rangailunda, OUAT, reminded about the collaborative work of College of Fisheries and CIFA. She congratulates the CIFA team for the excellent work in NEH, which has brought perceptible changes in Aquaculture development. The main objective of the training programme is to make the participants aware about the brood stock management and quality seed production of carps and magur in FRP hatcheries; tilapia, cat fish, murrel, prawn farming; ornamental fish rearing and pearl farming. More than 20 fish farmers and officials from Meghalaya attended the programme. Vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Ferosekhan, Scientist. Mr K. Anantharaja and Mr. Suhas Prakash Kamble, Scientists coordinated the programme. ICAR-CIFA under its NEH Programme has undertaken several initiatives for development of freshwater aquaculture in all eight states such as Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. Portable FRP hatcheries technologies have gone to these eight hill states for quality fish seed productions and supply to local farmers. The FRP carp hatchery technology has been incorporated in to the state policy of Meghalaya. Nalabari, Assam became a magur seed hub and this success could be achieved through installation and operation of FRP magur hatcheries in that region. Magur seed production technology is getting popular in Manipur state. Pabda breeding and seed production technologies have been demonstrated in Tripura. We have undertaken the fish culture demonstration in Bodo Territorial Council, Assam through a MoU signed between ICAR-CIFA & BTC. The demonstration and training started this year (from February) in 8.0 ha pond area at Manumari Village of Udalguri District. Integrated fish farming has been demonstrated in Arunachal Pradesh and Bodo Territorial Council of Assam. Jayanti rohu (genetically improved variety) technology for better grow-out production has been demonstrated in Assam, Manipur and Tripura. Other technologies like application of CIFAX for EUS control and pond environment management; CIFABROODTM as brood fish diet, etc. are being supplied from this institute for demonstration and benefit of the region. In last two decades, several trainings and demonstration programmes are being conducted by ICAR-CIFA for the farmers, entrepreneurs and state officials of all eight NEH states at Kausalyaganga (Odisha), Kalyani (West Bengal) and in their respective states.
