As a goodwill gesture, Pakistan on Sunday released 220 Indian fishermen who were held for trespassing into Pakistan’s territorial waters, a Pakistani official said. The freed fishermen are expected to cross over into India on Monday. “We released 220 Indian fishermen today as a goodwill gesture,” Deputy Superintendent of Karachi’s Malir prison Hassan Sehto said. He further mentioned that remaining 219 will still remain in Pakistani custody. The fishermen of India and Pakistan are often detained for illegal fishing as the Arabian Sea border is not clearly defined and several boats could not fix their precise location. Thereafter, the fishermen often end up languishing in jail even after serving their terms. Since the diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan are not very sound right now, fulfilling the bureaucratic requirements can take a long time. Relations between the two nations have plummeted since a deadly attack on an Indian army base in the Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri in September. Thereafter, India carried out surgical strikes in Pakistan at the terror launchpads. There have since been repeated outbreaks of cross-border firing, with both sides reporting deaths and injuries.
