The University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore and the Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute (PRFRI) of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate and cooperate in the field of fresh river/pond fisheries and related technologies.

UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha and Director General Prof Shuqin Wu from Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute signed the MOU, which aims at academic exchanges and research cooperation in fisheries and related technologies for the development of the fisheries sector of both the countries.

Both the organizations will cooperate in sustainable utilization and management of fisheries resources, fisheries eco-environment protection and aquatic product quality and safety, semi-intensive and intensive fish farming, aquatic germplasm resource and genetic breeding, high yield techniques of fish farming and nutrition research on floating and sinking feeds for fish and shrimp, turtle farming, fish seed hatching, and fish farm management.

They will also cooperate in fish disease diagnosis and their control and work together to seek alternate sources of funding for joint projects. They will share information on fresh water fisheries, exchange experts and hold joint workshops and symposia. A pilot project on the recirculation tanks system for intensive tilapia culture will also be initiated jointly.

The Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute will assist the UVAS in modernization of existing infrastructure in Punjab and establishment of new laboratories in phases to undertake research work on modern lines.

The PRFRI will provide UVAS the mature technology for high-value turtle farming and propagation.
