The Philippines is exploring increased tuna trade with Indonesia.
The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority-Davao Fish Port Complex (PFDA-DFPC) has initiated discussions with representatives from the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Davao City for enhanced partnership between the port and Indonesian fisherfolk and fishing boat operators. PFDA is an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture.
The meeting, held on January 22, 2023, focused on opportunities for transshipment, trade, and processing of abundant tuna catch from Indonesian fish workers, PFDA said in a statement.
PFDA-DFPC port manager Albert Aguinaldo collaborated with Consulate General and Consul for Protocol and Consul Affairs officer-in-charge Harya Kakerasana Sidharta and Consul for Economic Affairs Novita S.D. Supit to look into potential collaborations that would strengthen ties and foster increased tuna trade between the Philippines and Indonesia.
The meeting also highlighted the significance of Talaud Island Regency located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The regency is recognized as a marine sanctuary for fresh tuna fishing activities and similar species, providing a strategic opportunity for partnership and operational collaboration.
