The Cebu provincial government in the Philippines is embarking on an ambitious plan to have 80 percent of all farmers and fishermen in the entire province insured with the Philippine Crops Insurance Corporation (PCIC) by yearend.

Coverage will extend to crops, livestock, equipment, and personal accident insurance, said Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia during a two-day strategic planning and target setting with Capitol department heads and consultants in Moalboal town.

“It is important that we are able to extend this service to as many as possible, and we’re talking of as much as 45,000 fisherfolk and farmers, she said.

To date, 25 percent of that much farmers and fishermen are already covered since the third quarter of 2011.

Garcia said it took time to conceptualize the program, which included haggling for a very low premium to be paid to PCIC. However, with the template in place, implementing the program for the next batch of farmers and fisher folk would be easier, she said.
