Fishermen in Ilocos Sur are taking steps to protect fish pens from the hot and dry weather that may prevail in the next few months due to the ongoing El Niño.

In Sta. Catalina town, fishermen are making sure their pens have enough water, GMA Ilocos reported on Monday.

One fisherman, Mang Manuel, even set up an irrigation system to make sure his fish pen can save water.

The fishermen in the area said they are wary of the hot weather, which they said could lead to fish kill.

For its part, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources gave tips on how to avoid fish kill, including:

make sure the fish pond has a depth of at least one meter
the stocking rate should be only 2,400 fingerlings in an 80-square-meter area
the bigger fish should be harvested early

“Kailangang ma-harvest yung mga malalaking isda,” said provincial fishery coordinator Erlina Valdez
