Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi on Saturday inspected the modern fish market complex on East Coast Road. To her question on the delay in opening thefish market, officials said that the 110 beneficiaries had to be selected through a draw of lots. Oulgaret Municipal Commissioner M.S.Ramesh apprised the Lieutenant Governor of the pending electrical works to be carried out in the market. Ms. Bedi instructed the officials to review the progress of works in September before taking a decision to open the market. Features of the complex The two-storey fully air-conditioned Modern Fish Market is spread over 37,886 square feet. It was built by the Project Implementation Agency (PIA) under the Tsunami Emergency Rehabilitation Project I. World Bank financially assisted in the construction by providing Rs.13.5 crore. The complex was inaugurated by former Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on February 19, 2014. The complex was planned to cater to the needs of fishermen from several coastal villages in Puducherry. It has around 110 air-conditioned stalls, including 55 with cold storage facilities on the ground floor. It also has separate areas for processing and cutting fish. The complex also has space for facilities including an effluent treatment plant, ATM, 10-tonne capacity ice plant and auction hall for fishes. The plant has been fitted with a 10-KV solar power plant to meet the requirements of the shopping area.
