The role of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the development of inland fisheries in the country was stressed at a seminar that concluded in Kerala, India, on Friday.

The programme was organised by the Fisheries Department in connection with Fish Farmers Day. The day was celebrated to commemorate the successful technology developed in induced breeding of carps by the Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute in 1957.

Delivering a speech on emerging trends in inland aquaculture in the country, M. Feroz Khan, scientist, Bangalore centre of Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, said ICT’s enabling technologies allowed quicker and more efficient exchange and processing of information in inland fisheries resources .In inland fisheries new ICTs were being used across the sector from fisheries resource assessment, capture, culture to processing and disaster management, Dr, Khan said. Special equipment such as sonar and echo sounders were being used for faster detection.
