A massive search for five young Canadian fishermen whose boat capsized off Nova Scotia was scaled down as the military concluded there was little hope for their survival.
The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax issued a statement Tuesday saying the search would be handed over to the police because of “frigid water and poor weather conditions.”
Two coast guard vessels and five aircraft covered more than 18,000 square kilometers (6,950 square miles) of open ocean since the search started late Sunday. The 13-meter fishing boat Miss Ally capsized about 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Liverpool, Nova Scotia as it was tossed about by 10-meter (11-yard) waves.
