As the fisheries department in South Africa kicks off its annual festive season Marine Protection Awareness campaign today, officials claim they’ve received death threats from illegal fisherman in the Paternoster area.
The campaign is aimed at preserving endangered marine life.
The department’s Lionel Ardendorf says officials were advised by police to withdraw from the area as a safety measure.
The team from the department has been forced to withdraw following increased threats and intimidation.
