The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment reopened the jack mackerel fishery in ICES area IXa, from Finisterre to the mouth of the river Miño, on Wednesday (9 October). The fishery has been closed since 1 October 2012.
The reopening was made possible owing to the efforts put in by the Secretariat General of Fisheries.
The reopening has led to the achievement of a shared exchange of mackerel with Portugal (900 tonnes).
In addition, the Ministry has utilised the flexible mechanisms enabling the Community Regulation of TACs and quotas, under which Spain can fish up to five per cent of its quota for jack mackerel in the area VIIIc (from Finisterre to the mouth of the river Bidasoa) in ICES zone IXa.
The exchange with Portugal will also benefit trawler fleets in the Northwest Bay of Biscay, the south of Galicia, the Spanish trawl fishing in waters of Portugal and the Gulf of Cadiz.
