Chinese Vice Minister of agriculture, Chen Xiaohua and a delegation of Chinese officials met Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Mahinda Amaraweera and the officials of the Fisheries Ministry on recently and engaged in bilateral talks regarding Sri Lanka’s fisheries industry. During discussions, the delegation expressed agreement in providing technical and training assistance for the proposed marine fish hatchery in Batticaloa and the Sea Cucumber farming projects of National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA). Minister Amaraweera invited Chinese investors to try the investment opportunities in Sri Lankan fisheries. He pointed out to the delegation that around 116 lagoons in coastal areas of the island are scheduled to be developed under public and private enterprises and a huge income could be earned by lagoon- associated fish breeding. Chinese government has been extending significant support in the development of fisheries and aquatic resources in Sri Lanka.
