Minister of Fisheries -Douglas Devananda has said that the issue of Indian fishermen illegally entering the Sri Lankan waters for fishing, should be resolved at a diplomatic level. He mentioned this at a recent meeting of the Ministerial Consultative Committee on Fisheries.

Speaking, Navy officers who had been summoned to the meeting had said that as per directives received, the number of such arrests had been increased and the number of Indian vessels illegally entering the local waters has become notably less.

The committee Chair pointed out that this issue cannot be resolved by the Navy alone.  It was stated in the committee that this should be resolved through diplomatic level discussions between Sri Lankan politicians and South Indian politicians.

It was also stated that all MPs representing the respective areas should work together regardless of party, opposition, race or region
