Sri Lanka has formally petitioned the Myanmar government for clemency on behalf of Sri Lankan fishermen currently detained in Myanmar.
Janaka Bandara, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to Myanmar speaking to News 1st emphasized the significance of Myanmar’s upcoming public amnesty day, scheduled for the 17th.
He has also directly appealed to the Prime Minister of Myanmar to consider granting amnesty to these Sri Lankan citizens. 15 Sri Lankan fishermen find themselves in custody due to alleged violations of Myanmar’s maritime boundaries.
The group of fifteen Sri Lankan fishermen embarked on their fishing expedition from Kalpitiya and Negombo aboard the vessels ‘Ryan Putha’ and ‘Lawrence’ in November 2023. They were apprehended by Myanmar security forces on December 2nd.
