The Sri Lanka Navy Thursday said it has arrested seven local fishermen on 24th May for allegedly engaged in illegal fishing practices. Naval personnel attached to SLNS Vijayaba in Nilaveli belonging to the Eastern Naval Command arrested seven persons engaged in illegal fishing activities using explosives in the sea area North of Erakkandi on 24th May 2016. Along with the suspects, two dinghies, three pairs of diving fins, a banned fishing net (Monofilament Net) and oxygen cylinders were also taken in to the naval custody. The apprehended persons and the belongings were handed over to Kuchchaweli Police through Area Fisheries Inspector for onward legal action.
