The Sri Lanka Navy has yesterday arrested three local fishermen for allegedly engaging in illegal fishing practices. Naval personnel attached to SLNS Walagamba located in Kuchchaweli in the Eastern Naval Command arrested the three local fishermen who engaged in illegal fishing activities using explosives in the sea area off Poduwakattu on Sunday (13). During the raid, a dinghy, and 50 kg of fish were also taken into naval custody. The apprehended persons along with the seized items have been handed over to Kuchchaweli Police for onward action. Sri Lanka’s Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Sources Development Mahinda Amaraweera recently requested the Navy to arrest local fishermen using illegal fishing methods regardless of their social standing.
