State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi today assured to provide an urgent, sustainable solution to prevent the coastal erosion in Tangalle, Mawella area in Southern Sri Lanka. The State Minister said immediate steps will be taken to prevent the erosion of the coastline in the area as a number of fishing boats are damaged and fishing activities have been hampered due to the erosion. State Minister Wedaarachchi today held a special meeting with the relevant officials at the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development to discuss the measures taken to prevent coastal erosion and the provision of relief to the affected fishermen. He said the coast of the Tangalle, Mawella area has recently been affected damaged severely due to sea erosion. The fishing boats have been damaged and the fisheries community is suffering as a result and an immediate solution need to be provided.. State Minister Wedaarachchi made a request to the Fisheries Department Director General Christie Lal Fernando and the Director General of the Department of Coast Conservation VK Prabath Chandrakerthi to take immediate measures to restore the coastline. Minister Wedaarachchi also instructed the relevant officials to take measures to repair the damaged boats promptly so that the fishermen can return to fishing. On 1st of this month, State Minister Wedaarachchi had discussions with the fishermen in the area after inspecting the coastal belt and observing the fishing boats that were destroyed by the erosion in the Tangalle – Mawella coastal area.
