The first two deep sea fishing vessels equipped with modern technology and especially made for Sri Lanka, have arrived at the Dickowita Fishery Harbor. The two vessels have been imported to utilize in deep sea fishing under the “Blue Economy” program introduced by the State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Dilip Wedaarachchi to reap maximum benefits from marine resources and open employment opportunities in the fisheries sector as well as new avenues of income. For some years, the discussions have been focused on the integration of high-efficiency vessels with such modern technology for improved fishing operations, according to the State Minister. Under the Blue economy program implemented in line with the President’s food security program to create new jobs, manage fisheries resources, strengthen institutes to eliminate poverty as well as to minimize post-harvest losses the Ministry expects to import more such vessels through fisheries associations to distribute among the fisheries community. A fisheries businessman, who was a fisherman for some time, has imported the two vessels. The State Minister points out that by adding such vessels to the fisheries industry, the country will have great economic advantages. The Ministry also intend to take measures to develop the domestic canned fish industry in order to save around 12 billion rupees annually spent for importing canned fish, the Minister said.
