Served up on a plate, this sweet and sour fish stew had one unusual surprise – the fish appears to still be alive when the hungry customer in China started to tuck into their meal.

The severed head of the dark grey fish sits on the edge of the plate but despite the remainder of its body being turned into stew, the animal appears to move.

The hungry customer uses a pair of black chopsticks to carefully select a small portion of the fish’s pinky white flesh, covered in a brown sauce and vegetables causing the animal to twitch.

The bizarre video is thought to have been filmed in a restaurant in Yuexiu District, located in the Chinese province of Guangzhou.

Upon removing the chunk of flesh, the fish can be seen twitching and pulsating as it wriggles on the edge of the plate.

The elegant grey fins of the animal flutter in pain as the fish appears to be alive as the diner continues to dig into its body.

Even when the fish begins to twitch on the plate, the hungry customer doesn’t appear too distracted from enjoying the sweet and sour sauce covering the remains of the fish’s body.

It is unclear when the video was filmed but it is not the first time a twitching fish has appeared to return from the dead.

One woman was filmed scaling a fish in her kitchen when the body of the decapitated animal began to move in her hands.

Despite the bowfin being gutted and removed of all its internal organs, the spinal nerve inside the fish reacts to the woman’s sharp knife, causing the fish to writhe around in her hands.

Forced to use a towel to stop her supper from slithering away, the woman has to battle with the dead fish before it slips into the sink.

After a short battle, she manages to slice the fish’s flesh into pieces and prepare it for her supper.

Similarly a large piece of beef caused another lady a surprise in China when it appeared to pulsate on the table an hour after it was butchered.
