Fishermen from Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam have called for the formation of a committee to safeguard their livelihoods from projects that threaten their way of life.

The fishing community is concerned that ongoing and upcoming developments could harm their traditional fishing activities. A consultation meeting was held on Friday, led by the Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam panchayat sabha, to discuss concerns about proposed projects that could disrupt fishing areas.

Fishermen argued that these developments will have a negative impact on their access to vital fishing zones. One key issue is the announcement of a 15-km sea link bridge between Nochikuppam and Neelankarai Kuppam, which fishermen believe can block important fishing areas. They also opposed plans to obtain ‘Blue Flag’ certification for Marina, Elliot’s, and Thiruvanmiyur beaches, fearing that these efforts may limit spaces for the use of large nets and drying fish.

In addition, the Chennai Shoreline Renourishment and Revitalization project of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority in areas such as Tiruvottiyur and Royapuram has raised more concerns. Fishermen warn that such projects are likely to reduce their access to crucial fishing zones.

To protect their interests, the fishing community has called for the formation of a committee that includes local representatives from panchayats between Triplicane and Kanathur Reddikuppam. They also asked for long-term plans to address their housing needs and challenges posed by rising sea levels. “We hope that this committee will help voice their concerns and help ensure that future development projects do not compromise their way of life,” said M. Chandrasekhar of Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam.
