Fishermen of the district have opposed the move to bring 18 coastal hamlets under the proposed Nagercoil Corporation’s jurisdiction. Raising the issue in the fishermen’s grievance redressal meet held at the Collectorate on Friday, the participants said the fishermen of Kanniyakumari would never allow the move to bring 18 coastal hamlets of the district under the jurisdiction of the proposed Nagercoil Corporation. Since it would lead to the fishermen losing their representation in local bodies like Pallam and Manakkudi, the fishermen would not allow it to happen. Similarly, the move to annex Simon Colony, Kallukoottam, Ritapuram, Mondaicaud panchayats with Colachel municipality should be given up. “If you are really interested in the development of the coastal hamlets, make every coastal village into a panchayat and reserve one of the six Assembly constituencies in the district for fishermen. Or just allow the coastal fisherfolk to be with Kerala, they said. Municipal Commissioner Saravanakumar said the public opinion on annexing the rural areas with the proposed Corporation would be given due importance before any final decision was taken. When the residents of Suchindram did not want to be a part of the proposed Nagercoil Corporation, it was accepted. The fishermen could register their views when the public hearing would be organised.
