National Fishworkers’ Forum, a member organisation of World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP), will launch ‘One fish, one fish worker’ campaign from August 21 to raise funds for the 7th General Assembly of WFFP to be held in Delhi in November and sensitise the fisherfolk on the impending threats to their livelihood. Talking to reporters here on Friday, NFF general secretary T. Peter said the forum had been given the honour of hosting the general assembly in Delhi from November 15 to 20. The campaign was being launched to raise a sum of Rs. 80 lakh to meet the expenses for hosting the general assembly, he said. While collecting money from fishermen, its affiliated organisations in all coastal States and union territories would sensitise fisherfolk on the need to oppose the Centre’s Sagarmala project which was aimed at promoting port modernisation and port-linked industrialisation on the coastline and Marine Coastal Regulation Zone. Those projects would not only destruct the coastal environment but destroy the livelihood of the fishing community, he said. The organisations would collect fish from fish landing centres and fish markets in the coastal States and auction them to raise funds, he said. Ahead of the WFFP general assembly, the NFF would organise regional level workshops throughout the country and the first workshop would be held in Thiruvananthapuram on September 26 followed by the second workshop in West Bengal on September 29 and the third in Goa, for which the date would be announced later, he said. The regional workshops would discuss climate change and how it affected fishing. The workshops would chalk out issues to be raised in the general assembly, he added. After the end of the general assembly, a massive rally would be taken out on November 21, coinciding with World Fisheries Day, he said. About 2,000 fishermen delegates from India and more than 200 from abroad were expected to take part in the general assembly, he said.
