Lack of jetties in Kanniyakumari district has forced fishermen to dock their mechanized boats in Kerala and this has brought about a plethora of problems, said fishermen at a grievance meet held here on Friday. General Secretary of South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF) Fr. Churchil said that in order to dock their boats in Kerala, the Kanniyakumari fishermen were forced to register their boats in the name of those residing in Kerala. Because of this, the Kanniyakumari fishermen were unable to claim damages from the Tamil Nadu government if anything happened on high seas, Fr. Churchil added. Neithal Makkal Iyakkam District Secretary Kurumbani Berlin urged the district administration to monitor the funds received by the NGOs for implementation of various welfare schemes in coastal villages. He also sought to know whether the district administration was taking steps to recommend a monthly pension for fishermen aged above 60 years. Replying to his query, Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan said that the district administration has prepared a proposal and it would be sent to the government in a day or two. They also urged the administration to take steps to desilt AVM canal from Erayumanthurai to Arogyapuram after removing encroachments on either side. Another fisherman demanded the government to facilitate loan facilities to fishermen from TIDCO, TIIC and SIDCO. At the meeting, the Collector distributed a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the family of the fisherman V. Mariya Sagaya Joseph alias Prabhakaran (42) of Kesavanputhenthur who drowned in sea on December 24, 2014 through the Group Insurance Scheme for fishermen. DRO S.
