The National Fisherfolk Forum (NFF) will approach the United Nations Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland, for a probe into the recurring incidents of Tamil fishermen being killed along the maritime boundary line with Sri Lanka, if justice was not obtained from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). M. Ilango, NFF chairman, said that over the years the killing at sea of more than 500 fishermen in the region who were fishing for their livelihood and were not involved in any criminal activities was a blatant act of human rights violation. “It is the duty of the government to investigate and find out whether the Tamil fisherman were killed by the Sri Lankan Navy or terrorists or pirates, Mr. Ilango said. Pointing to a recent case in which a fisherman from Thangachimadam near Rameswaram of Ramnad district was shot dead allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy while fishing in mechanised boat, Mr. Ilango said the NFF had filed a complaint with the NHRC after the Tamil Nadu police failed to take “proper action. The Commission which registered a case looked into the petition and ordered the Ministry of External Affairs to take up investigation through an appropriate investigating agency. In the order dated April 26 to MOEA, the NHRC demanded that investigation should be completed within eight weeks and ‘action taken report’ filed to NHRC and to the complainant. ‘No word yet’ Though the prescribed period has lapsed, there was no word from either NHRC, the MOEA, the CBI or any investigative agency, Mr. Ilango said. “We have decided to approach the NHRC again and if no action is taken even after it, we have decided to move the UNHCHR, Mr. Ilango said.
