Mechanised boat fishermen in Thoothukudi have begun an indefinite strike, pressing their various demands, including permission for stay fishing. A total of 265 mechanised boats operate from Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour, where fishermen, who are prohibited from staying in the sea, are required to return before 9 p.m. every day.

For a long time, these fishermen have been demanding permission to stay in the deep sea waters for fishing. They have also been urging authorities to take action against Kerala-based mechanised boats fishing in Thoothukudi region.

In addition to these demands, the fishermen seek withdrawal of cases filed against 11 mechanised boat owners and workers from Thoothukudi Fishing Harbour last year. They also demand alternative livelihood measures for the mechanised boat fishermen of the region.

All the mechanised boats remained anchored at the harbour on Monday. The strike is also expected to result in significant revenue loss for the fishermen, as the harbour typically facilitates substantial daily fish sales. Sources said Fisheries Department officials were holding talks with striking fishermen to resolve the issues.
