Demanding the release of fishermen and their fishing crafts, fishermen observed a hunger strike at Thangachimadam on Rameswaram Island on Monday. The hunger strike will continue on Tuesday. The Sri Lankan navy has apprehended 122 fishing trawlers between 2018 and 2023. In October, the Sri Lankan navy apprehended 64 fishermen and four fishing trawlers. The Lankan courts also extended the judicial custody of the fishermen. In response, Rameswaram fishermen have announced a series of protests, including a hunger strike on Monday. The fishermen’s leaders demanded the immediate release of the 64 fishermen and their fishing crafts from Sri Lankan custody.

Furthermore, the Sri Lankan courts have released nine fishing trawlers after the boat owners won their release in court. However, they are unable to salvage the boats from Sri Lanka because the Union government has not granted clearance, according to the fishermen’s leaders. They urged the Union government to allow them to salvage these nine boats.

The fishermen also demanded compensation of Rs 30 lakh for all the boats sunk by the Sri Lankan navy and the boats that have rotted in Sri Lankan custody. They called on the state and central governments to make efforts to resolve the long-standing dispute between Tamil Nadu and Sri Lankan fishermen and secure traditional fishing rights near the Katchatheevu islet.
