Six fishermen who set sail from Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu on a country boat were apprehended by the Sri Lankan coast guard on Tuesday night on charges of poaching in the territorial waters of the island nation. The fishermen hailing from Nambuthazhai near Thondi went on a fishing expedition on a boat owned by G Sathiyaraj. According to Sri Lankan navy website, coast guard personnel attached to a Fast Attack Craft from Northern Naval Command arrested the fishermen engaged in “illegal fishing activities” north off the Kovilan coast. The fishermen and their boat were handed over to the assistant fisheries director in Jaffna on Wednesday for onward action. The fishermen were later produced in a court in Kayts and were remanded in judicial custody till June 7, said U Arulanandam of the Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen in Pamban. They were lodged in a Jaffna prison. As of now, 11 fishermen are in Sri Lankan custody. This is the second incident after the 61-day fishing ban for trawlers started on April 15. On May 1, five fishermen from Pamban who sailed on a country boat were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy. With the country boat, the number of Indian fishing crafts in Sri Lankan custody had reached 145, Arulanandam said.
