Sri Lankan Navy arrested seven Indian fishermen and confiscated a mechanized fishing boat on the alleged charges of straying into the territorial waters of the Island nation and indulged in illegal fishing activities on Thursday. Official sources said fishermen had ventured into the sea in as many as 400 trawlers from Rameswaram fishing jetty yesterday morning. When a group of fishermen were fishing near the Delft Island bordering International Maritime Boundary Line, the Sri Lankan naval personnel detained a boat with seven fishermen on board. The arrested fishermen were handed over to the Lankan fisheries officials for onward legal action. Meanwhile, other fishermen who returned to the shore after the attack alleged that the Sri Lankan naval personnel attacked a number of fishing boats and destroyed the fishing nets.
